Utility Partners of America (UPA) has completed a Meter Upgrade Project for Sacramento Municipal Utility District’s (SMUD). As of March 15, 2026, the team reached 191,000 meter installations and 100 percent completion of the project, ahead of schedule and under budget. Strong coordination between UPA and SMUD across planning, scheduling, and field operations made it happen.
Sacramento’s high concentration of remote-working customers created significant appointment demand throughout the deployment. UPA’s scheduling and operational processes rose to meet it, keeping the project on track and delivering a positive customer experience.
“Our customers in Sacramento were well taken care of throughout this project. The team worked hard to make every appointment count, and it showed in the results.” -Johnny Simmons, Senior Project Manager
The project also supported SMUD’s workforce initiative program, opening doors for community members to enter the utility field. Seventy new jobs were established through the program, with continuing education available for individuals pursuing careers in utility services.
The updated metering infrastructure supports improved operational visibility and long-term system reliability for SMUD. Standardized installation processes contributed to consistent work quality and technician safety across every installation.
